Dispatch from COP28: Key Takeaways and Expected Outcomes

This virtual panel, featuring experts on the ground at COP28 and those who have attended the event, looks at the main takeaways of the discussions in Dubai and assesses future perspectives for the global climate.

The 28th United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP28) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is taking place from 30 November-12 December 2023 and is attended by over 70,000 people.

COP28 has taken place against the backdrop of worldwide surges in extreme weather, as well as heated controversies on future exploration and oil and gas investments.

The expected outcomes of the climate summit include:

1. the operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund, established at COP27, to provide financial assistance for the most vulnerable nations impacted by climate change;

2. the finalization of a framework for the Global Goal of Adaptation; and

3. the issuance of a new climate finance goal, up from the previous $100 billion goal.

COP28 has seen momentum in pledges for the Loss and Damage Fund and other climate funds, as well as for renewable energy and energy efficiency targets. Notably, for the first time in history, discussions on food systems and agriculture were included in the conference’s opening session.

In this virtual meeting, experts on the ground in Dubai and those who have attended COP28 will explore key discussions, takeaways, and milestones, what is currently being done, what still needs to happen, and what has been missing.
